Don't confuse with the R25-2 which is a box type battery, also numbered 711.

This is really the Zinc Carbon type (4 of, in series) used to be commonly found in the Lantern battery.

The NiMH types are found in some electric assisted bicycles as they are more efficient (power to weight) than Lead Acid batteries.

The "balanced LT battery" concept came about due to the problem with operating portable radio sets. Most of the small sets ran on a 467 HT battery and a D cell for the LT. Due to the difference in capacity and drain, you would have to replace the LT battery about five times before the HT battery wore out! Battery manufacturers sought to create a pair of batteries that would be exhausted about the same time, hence the term "Balanced". 964 Balanced LT battery nothing more than an F cell, or a longer D cell with a higher capacity and, therefore, can be replaced by a D cell and a suitable spacer (as it's about 1.5 times the height of a D cell) or a D cell in a holder, as the 964 has not been available since the early 1980s.
